Rhus lancea "African Sumac" or
"Karee"
This medium-sized tree has a low branching habit
and a softly rounded crown. The bark is grey-brown
with newer branches being reddish, with lance-like
(hence Lancea) leathery trifoliate leaves.
This is a well suited tree for hot areas around
the home, as it provides shade and is drought resistant,
without an aggresive root system. Frost hardy and
evergreen, this tree provides cover for frost tender
plants below. It makes a good noise and wind screen,
perfect for perimetre planting. It thrives in dry
or waterlogged soils, while the willow-like leaves
are aethetically pleasing. A quick grower and a
maintanace free-choice once established.
